Utilizing Popsicle sticks, rubber bands, and cotton balls students will construct small catapults and use the Engineering Design Process to evaluate the prototype design. Items may be substituted and variations of the catapult may be pursued differently than outlined. The focus is not the catapult but the design process to build and evaluate the siege machine.

Student Instructions
Students will utilize items available at home to construct mini-medieval siege machines, small popsicle stick catapults. Review and follow the attached pdf "STEM EDP Worksheet. Follow the "Build a Popsicle Stick Catapult" instructions. Evaluate the process you are using and reflect on the EDP process. Answer the questions on and complete the EDP Worksheet. Consider the different changes you make in the design and how they change the efficacy of the device. If you do not have the material available to construct the catapult the way as shown in the video, do not rush out and purchase anything. There are multiple ways to accomplish constructing a small catapult. To include, plastic spoons, paperclips, etc. I recommend reaching out to the internet for ideas or ask you STEM teacher.

Learning Opportunity Objective
Design and develop several solution prototypes, conductfeasibility testing, and use the data to justify the solution selected.

Comments
Remember, the focus is the EDP not the size or destructive capability of your device. For additional focus, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXPD4nMED-k These are advanced kraft stick catapults that go long. See if you can design a better one.
